WPP is a “found footage” project based on historical World Press Photo images. The question I asked myself was whether in the time after WWII there emerged something we could call a collective imaginary, whether there is a common repository of images, events, gestures; and, finally, if a project to create an atlas of sorts base on them – like Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne – seems feasible at all today.
WPP consists of two films, animated slideshows actually. A Short History of Violence is a medidation on the most debated aspect of photojournalism, namely the representation of acts of violence. My aim in showing those pictures was to achieve a temporal dilation, removing them from their brutal, rhetorical immediacy. Faces of History was an attempt at finding out who in those years (re)appeared as historical figures/actors.
