ex-posed came out of my interest in museums as sites of representation and reconstruction of history. One of the project’s basic premises is that re-presentation and re-construction is always already presentation and construction and that, therefore, museums are above all sites for the staging of histories. History as image: those institutions have at their disposal a whole array of effects and strategies to transform single objects, documents, or situations into images to immerse us in.
By showing the exhibition spaces of three very different museums (the Natural History Museum, Ethnographic Museum, and the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising in Warsaw), and the creating the possibility to compare them, the project’s aim was to render opaque their rhetorics that serve to convince the viewer of the truth or authenticity of the exhibits. This is why the “book” is acually a box of photographs that can be arranged at will; in this way the viewer is empowered to create his/her own juxtapositions.
