about

I am an artist working mainly with photography, Assistant Professor at the Łódź Filmschool, art historian, translator.

In my artistic practice I am trying to develop visually compelling forms of thinking. As Susan Buck-Morss stated so aptly, “The image is frozen perception. It provides the armature for ideas.” Hence my interest in the (post)modern fate of images – their power and powerlessness in creating a world-image, in producing identities, facts and fictions, the fact that they already mediate a large part of our being in the world. This is why I tend to work in image constellations, rather than with individual images or sequences, and also why I often appropriate already taken photographs into my projects by re-photographing them; in the end, photographing a photograph is today in many respects like photographing a landscape.

My scholarly work was also guided by a sort of deconstructive impulse, trying to get a critical perspective on how various phenomena and things are made. The questions I was asking myself were, among others, what is critical realism and how might it be critical today (on the basis of Allan Sekula’s work), what is a picture and how does it work (on the basis of the work of Thomas Struth), what was modernism and how did it work (on the basis of the work of Michael Fried), how do you construct an identity or an event, how do you represent war, critically?

I am also editor at View. Theories and Practices of Visual Culture.
